These have been developed to meet an increasing number of peoples wishes for a more environmentally friendly form of burial.
Green funerals focus on preserving the environment and local wildlife at the funeral site. In addition, coffins can be made of easily biodegradable materials such as recycled wood, bamboo, wicker or cardboard. At a woodland site relatives may plant a tree as a memorial to their loved ones, though headstones and other memorial plaques are almost always prohibited. At a nature reserve burial site small wooden biodegradable plaques may be used to mark the grave and flowers befitting the local environment planted on the grave.
